A Fluorescent Sky (2022)
Writer | Director | Producer | Co-EditorA single father struggles with keeping the inherited family business afloat battling against the commercial supermarket, whilst keeping his young daughter inside with home schooling and minimal connection with the outside world. When she discovers old family tapes of her mother she doesn't really remember, her curiosity get the better of her. With it brings the clash of what she doesn't know, and the little she does, spiralling with devastating results.
A Fluorescent Sky is my debut feature film. The film aims to showcase the issues of our high streets, telling the story of a father and daughter who own a struggling corner shop. Winner of Best Director, Best International Feature, Best Actress and other Official Selections during its festival journey. The film is now available on Amazon Prime Video: click here to watch.
“A story about grief, inherited trauma, fatherhood, community spirit, and staying true to what you want. This is a sweet film and one that has a lot of heart. There's a subtle nature about the idea of community and the independent spirit which is wholesome. What I appreciate though is that there are nuances of naturalism that stops it from being too sentimental.” - Festival Formula
This film was made on a crowdfund budget of £10,000, backed by over 120 supporters, surpassing our initial budget. We were set to shoot in April 2020 before filming had to be postponed due to Covid19. We used the time to continue development, conducting workshops and a full script read-through with the entire cast over Zoom.
I was determined to make the most of this bad situation and also spent lockdown creating a documentary called The Film The Virus Tried To Stop which explores the changed trajectory of the film as well as incorporating video interviews with directors to discuss experiences making their first feature films. This documentary will be released along with the film.
We resumed production in June, raising more money to make the film after the first lockdown, managing to successfully and safely complete principle photography in September 2020. Post-Production was undertaken remotely throughout 2021 which proved challenging for collaboration, but I was able to coordinate the amazing collaborators we had involved to complete the film in January 2022.
